Say Hamas take the position that it is wrong to bomb women and children. I happen to agree. Does that make me "aligned to" (or even with) Hamas?
How exactly is protesting treatment of the Palestinians people something "the Secretary of State has reasonable ground to believe would have potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences." One kid--or dozens-- on a campus is going to scuttle US foreign policy? WHAT adverse consequences? It clearly did NOT have any effects on US foreign policy, much less adverse ones.
Isn't there a rather huge difference between disagreeing with US foreign policy and having the power to adversely affect it? The problem is that there is apparently case law that says that the Secretary of State's position is non-rebuttable. THAT is scarier than hell. Can Rubio just decide that not liking trump has potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences? Shouldn't he have to have SOME evidence, not just of the political position but also of the consequences?
Hamas killed women and children, so your hypothetical that they take the position bombing women and children is wrong is outright ridiculous. If you took the time to look into the organizations that Khalil was aligned with, they call the death of jews a victory and promote violence as resistance. There is SOME evidence, you just have not consumed it yet.
They’ll be stripping citizens of citizenship and doing the same soon. I gave $500 to the protesting kids at Brown last year—material support of free fucking speech against a genocide—and I’d do it again. These fascists can all go fuck themselves.
Alas, Doug, they do not like free speech of any sort except their personal thoughts about things which they then speak in one fashion or another. The only people they are interested in Fucking are people who disagree that the United States should be forcibly returned to 1670 or 1675 and the Rule of Law would be the dictates of the Puritan wealthy who govern that colony back then. Just ask David Barton if that isn’t the way to go!
This is NOT new. I had colleagues working in the government of the State of Tennessee in 1991 who believed that Mass at that time was the model Jefferson, Washington, Franklin and others actually wrote into the Constitution.
What was all that nonsense Trump was yammering on about during his 47 campaign about Obama and Biden “weaponizing” DOJ against him? WTF does he call siccing ICE on a legitimate green card-holding protest spokesperson? This after all the bitching the right did during Obama’s terms about the IRS going after so-called non-profits on the right that literally had “Tax Resistance”’in their names, and about the DOJ on their own, with Biden 100% hands off, legitimately (but too slowly) prosecuting Trump. He’s fucking out of control. Will no one stand up and tell him, “Enough!”?
This is beyond the pale of justice. I’m so embarrassed and disgusted at what Trump is doing.. targeting people, law firms, federal employees & agencies. This poor man deserves to be treated with dignity and I bet he feels likes he’s living in a 3rd world country.
Ironically, Trump doesn’t give a rats ass about protecting the Jews. Just look at how he ganged up on Zelenskyy in the oval? Mocking & berating him how he should be grateful ? The antisemitic behavior displayed at that moment was so apparent, and yet he wants to deport a green card student for antisemitism?
They want to deport Mahmoud and every Brown immigrant, even if they have permanent residency. But they also want to label all pro-Palestine activists as terrorists and anti-Semites.
How long can Khalil be held (legally) without being charged with a crime? This arrest is disturbing and questionable along with being complicated. For me, as a Jewish woman who has two grandchildren in colleges currently the rise in antisemitism in the United States is frightening. With as much fear that I have I want due process for Khalil. Hamas is a terrorist organization. Anyone who supports a terrorist in a direct and incites violence against Jewish people needs to be arrested and tried. It is the law that must be enforced.
The actions of the Trump administration are unacceptable. It’s a “slippery slope “ to head down “First they came for…” This opens a door we never need to open.
You are right. This is extremely terrible news. The beginning of the disappearances, the knocks on the door..... I hope the right to protest in peaceful assembly will be upheld by the courts. Thanks for covering this.
It is immaterial whether a person exercising the right of peaceful protest is absolutely right, has some justice on their side, or is absolutely dead wrong. Khalil was expressing an opinion he was constitutionally entitled to express, even if you disagree with his analysis.
The trump-musk regime has not only turned their backs on our international allies, they have actively aligned our government with Russia.
Now, our country is not only aligned with Russia, it is behaving exactly as Russia does. Arrest dissidents on false or no charges and make them disappear. Deny any and all due process. Use propaganda to malign them and make them national pariahs.
This is what an autocratic state looks like. This is who we are.
This is likely going to be a tough pill to swallow. This case is not about Khalil's right to speech. It's about the powers of the Secretary of State. The law may not provide the protections that the people believe it does. And while we continue with our comforting fairytales about "democracy," we may miss our very limited opportunity to stop this kind of rule with people power. {Deep sigh.}
I know little about the wars in the middle east. Always thought a two state solution was a fair idea but don't know the history as to why there is disagreement.
Because, while American defenders of Israel have continued to insist that they're all working towards a "two-state solution," Israel itself has been steadily annexing more and more territory for itself. So where are the borders of these two states going to be? Besides that concern, there's also the simple fact that even one ethnostate in this world is one too many; no matter how you slice the pie, there will still be people living within whatever borders comprise Two-State Israel who will either have to be deported or, should they stay, be second-class citizens because of their ethnicity and/or religious background.
Who's to say Mahmoud Khalil hasn't already been "disappeared" to Gitmo? DHS could easily fake flight records showing a Gitmo arrival well BEFORE Judge Furman issued his order re: deportation out of the US. Or, they could simply ignore the court and carry on with its brutal actions. Nothing can be considered too much with this crowd of B-list fascists,

They might be hypocritical, but it is still a position. How about “refusing to allow food or medical aid?”
I have nowhere see any evidence of which, if any, group Khalil was aligned with. Not even a name.
I was in many a Vietnam protest. Some were really big. If Maoist groups participated, that didn’t make me a Maoist.

So mcmahon is filing a bunch of Title VI actions against various universities while simultaneously cutting her own staff.
Okay.

Please note Trump has
now stated anyone

will be hunted down and
treated as such.
Welcome to the new USA.

I understand now. What's making it worse is Benjamin N.
We are in the streets resisting here in Washington DC
This should absolutely frighten us all.
