Once again, Trump is infuriated — not that a citizen was shot by ICE … but because ICE was caught at it.

HelmGirl's avatar

Pardon my language, but fuck trump. He is a monster.

Terry's avatar

His entire Republican Administration are monsters 👹

Roger's avatar

Trump wants these shootings in the news. It doesn't matter if ICE/CBP are caught as there is no DOJ Civil Rights Division mandate to investigate police use of force killings as of April 2025. That means no accountability, no arrests, no charges, or any form of punishment can be brought against the agencies or individual agents who commit crimes of any magnitude.

David J. Sharp's avatar

I’m not sure about that. Trump & Co. already face actions in federal courts; the news coverage may be proof against Trumpian bluster and misinformation

Ignatz ratskywatski's avatar

They want these murders along with the refusal of 🧊 to follow court orders in the news to terrorize people and create the impression that the coup es complet

The only case which could be reopened, because it was dismissed with out prejudice due to the court not wanting to prosecute a sitting president is the United States of America vs Donald J. Trump about his involvement with the Jan 6 capital building attack and his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results, which is being presided over by the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. However due to the 6-3 Landslide decision of the US Supreme Court in the case of Donald Trump vs the United States he is more than likely now immune to any criminal charges related to this case and it might not be reopened.

I hope I am wrong though.

J Thomas's avatar

Of course he’s immune. John Roberts and his MAGA colleagues said so. I don’t claim to be a lawyer, only a person who can read. The most damning portion of USA v. Trump was the explanation of the immunity bestowed on Trump for trying to coerce Pence to reject electors from several states. Even though Trump was illegally trying to force his VP to violate the Constitution, he could not be prosecuted because he was discussing the crime with a person who could be legitimately called an advisor, making it, according to Roberts, within the realm of his official duties. Think of the ramifications of that criterion.

I was talking about lower court cases in Minneapolis to address the ICE misbehavior there.

Elizabeth McIlvaine's avatar

Also murder is a state crime and the shooters can be prosecuted. If convicted of a state crime, Trump will not be able to pardon them.

Thank SCOUS and Johnie bigshot at the top.

Although they gave it everything they had, the gummint cpuld not cover their clearly guilty asswipe officials.

Thank you for this report.

Same. It’s all feels so shameful. I appreciate knowing the facts along with my emotions.

Robin Basney's avatar

The Obama’s Statement turned out to be a good way to talk to my middle schooler before school tomorrow. She couldn’t watch the movie Zootopia, I hope she doesn’t see the video at school. But at least she has the statement to refer to for facts and the bigger picture.

A dark cloud of oppression has descended over our country. Setting aside the knowing and willing impotency of Congress, the Supreme Court, the last bastion in the preservation of our liberties, is either blind to it or willing enablers of it. Being on the cusp of being an octagenerian. I may not live to see the restoration of our democracy, but I have no doubt that posterity will view this Congress and this Supreme Court with contempt for allowing Trump and his thugs to oppress the American people and the American dream.

Giuliana Reed's avatar

The Supreme Court is not blind. The six clearly DO NOT care. May they live in infamy and burn in hell. Each one of them. I knew John Roberts was no good from the get go. Scum all. I’m deeply ashamed for this country. And ashamed to be part of it.

Terry's avatar

You are right. They are complicit with every crime against America, our people and humanity that Trump and his Administration has ordered!

Lance Khrome's avatar

Echos the early years of Pinochet's Chile and Videla's Argentina...when will Bovino's boys start disappearing people, later to drop them from helicopters over the Great Lakes? "Oh, come on, man, WTF? This is America...we don't do shit like that...YET!"

MLJ's avatar

They’ve already started disappearing people without legal status.

Lance Khrome's avatar

Then they die in DHS gulags.

Sol ☀️ (He/They)'s avatar

After all, the US is in part responsible for Pinochet and Videla. We've supported and participated in the behavior before (disappeared Indigenous people, especially women.) I fear we are already continuing this vile fascist tradition with the lack of DHS oversight.

During trump 1.0, the feds kidnapped protesters off the streets of Portland in unmarked rental vans. We were lucky that then they were just testing the waters and all of the people they snatched up went free when it became clear they weren't being detained legally. We are not so lucky now.

All praise and gratitude to the doctor, all of the lawyers, and the witnesses for doing what must be done, and for doing it with dispatch. For all of us, another tsunami of grief and rage...

DJ Spastic's avatar

Agreed. Like Alex, these people are heroes.

MissAnneThrope's avatar

I hope they're in some sort of protective custody. The federal scumbags can't be trusted.

Michael Curry's avatar

This report is so timely and so valuable that in good conscience I had to subscribe to- at least for a while. Thanks again.

Noorillah's avatar

Stick around, friend. It's well worth it.

Thank you for this timely and powerful summary of these developments.

Thank you for your honesty

I’m in tears reading this and I am afraid

Afraid of what comes next

Watch the poll numbers. That's going to be the trll.

Krista Allen's avatar

Alex was shot three times IN HIS BACK. F’ing cowards shot a protester in the back. That alone dispels their myth of a “defensive shot against a crazed assassin” that the WH is pushing.

We now live in a police state. ICE is Trump’s version of the Gestapo. I have seen these thugs wearing protective equipment on their bodies bearing “CONSERVATION,” “BUREAU OF PRISONS,” “BORDER PATROL” (more than 250 miles outside their normal jurisdiction), and “POLICE,” some partially dressed in civilian clothes. How can anyone believe that they have been adequately trained when they aren’t even properly uniformed?

Brian MacKay's avatar

I'm confused by this. My understanding is that CPB has pretty much carte blanche at the border. Within the "border region" (an extremely generous 100 miles), they can atop and ask "are you an American citizen?" - but only if reasonable suspicion exists. They can also setup checkpoints on major highways heading out of the "border region" asking about citizenship and walking around your car with drug dogs.

If they ask about citizenship and you lie, that is a major offense. But, if you answer "yes", they can't ask for proof (if you answer "no", they can ask you for proof of your status (like a green card or a passport with an I-94).

WTF are they doing in Minneapolis. That's 150-ish miles from Duluth (the nearest port) and a lot further than that to International Falls (and the Canadian border). Are they considering international airports like MSP "the border" now?

I am 65 and a retired lawyer. I have never seen an order of a federal court, ordering the federal government not to alter or remove evidence from a crime scene. Federalism -- once the great Conservative clarion call -- is intended to protect citizens, by creating a multilayered body of process and evaluation of policy and practice. The federal response here is remarkable in ordinary times, but predictable with an administration, the aim of which is control and compliance. Watch the Sunday shows today: Cabinet officials and Administration flaks will distort what can be seen on the video evidence. Large media organizations will largely allow the Administration to flood the airwaves with falsehoods and distortions.

Nancy's avatar

What the MSM media does to distort this horror may be what frightens me the most because people believe the lies, after all, it's on television told by people with serious voices (but loud lies), and those people don't want to look for truth. They revel in the rush to power articulated! Feeling sick....

Christopher Cole's avatar

This is why our job -- or one of them -- is to encourage our friends and family members and acquaintances to shake through the rigid prism of mainstream broadcast media, support people like Heather Cox Richardson, Chris Geidner, Aaron Rupar and Don Moynihan, whose updates and commentary on this criminal regime help to counterbalance the "both sides" dilution of journalism. Reporting Noem's comments on this as "one side" is simply wrong, once the verifiable data and evidence is present to show that Noem's "side" is a deliberately false narrative. The destabilization of truth and the malleability of facts is what this administration advances, with a side order of brutal compliance to government orthodoxy. It's our fight.

Claire's avatar

Thank you for the clear writing.

Shelley Powers's avatar

Absolutely excellent writing on the legal efforts from yesterday, Chris. Especially since I know you're as upset, or more, than all of us are from the shooting.

This insanity has to end. And I don't think I've ever admired a people from a city as much as I admire the people in Minneapolis.

Anne Kiefer's avatar

Thank you for this reporting. The crime is horrific. The coverup takes it to a new level of depravity.
