I wonder about the enforceability of this. The Speaker does control the committee that works with the Architect of the Capitol on rules regarding the House buildings.

The GSA has a rule about no bigotry about bathrooms, but the GSA does not control the rules of the House buildings.

McBridge's response was excellent. She managed to stop the Johnson-enabled sideshow that is detracting from the Trump cabinet picks, and also demonstrate that she has more class than Johnson and his petty bigotry.

I wish she was my elected rep.

PS Excellent statement on Architect of the Capitol. You're the only journalist/commentator/reporter who actually noted this.

The bathroom issue is a fear that the right has promulgated against trans people.

Trans women in women’s spaces have NEVER been an issue until the right wing decided to make it a culture war. Most of the people complaining today didn’t even know trans women used those spaces until it became a culture war. But now we have to believe trans people have made it

Fact: predatory men don't need to pretend to be trans women in order to abuse women.

Fact: trans women are far more likely the target of sexual violence than the perpetrator.

fact: The real problem is no perpetrator is going to obey the law anyway. And doing nefarious things in the bathroom is already illegal.

Fact: It’s amazing to me how trans people are 4x more likely to be victims of sexual assault and are guilty of .001% of all sexual assault. Yet they are blamed for all sexual assault.

Fun fact: McBride will represent the largest number of constituents, by far, of any of the 435 House members in this congress.

Pocan is my representative and I would characterize the situation slightly differently from the way he does. It is the election of Republicans, anywhere and everywhere in this country, that has (already) opened the door to rampant abuse, harassment, and discrimination in the Capitol. The January 6th people won.

It is worth remembering that Mike Johnson and his Christian Nationalist ilk firmly believe that we are in the end times when (what they consider to be) sin and evil will dominate the world, before their god returns and saves them and destroys the rest of us. I'm quite sure that to them the election of Ms. McBride to the United States Congress serves as confirmation of this belief. I don't believe any of it but if I did, I would be quite certain it was instead MAGA and specifically their elected officials who represented the triumph of sin and evil.

They think every year is the end of times- and every 20 minutes it's possible the Rapture might happen. I'm starting to believe that none of these Christian nationalists politicians really even believe this shit - they just pander it out to their voter base. Religion is about fear and control and superstition to these nuts.

Yeah, I wonder. If these politicians don't actually believe any of it, they're still playing with fire. I think we'll know more in a few months.

Doing anything they possibly can to deflect from their corruption and their perverted candidates/politicians to keep their wilfully ignorant base all whipped up in a tissy.

I truly don’t think they’ll be happy til a trans person is burned at the stake.

Nor do I think they would stop at trans people.
