I suspect that they'll try severely modify or discard rules without public notice, so they can't be challenged. This is going to be incredibly dangerous.

Is this to be the future of American politics? Barefaced lies uttered with absolutely no shame? Trump wants to annex Canada; Putin has annexed Russia West.

I've often reviewed and occasionally commented on DHHS rules. We can assume that the professional organizations, health care institutions, and big businesses will continue to have access to rulemaking. This will cut out consumers, self-organized providers, and small businesses in full alignment with the TrumpMusk approach.

I worked for state government for 40 years and often commented on rules related to federal rehabilitation research grants. My colleagues and I submitted comments on regarding federally-funded services we provide, and the feds actually made changes to programs / procedures. The pipeline for receiving consumer feedback & participation was transparent & powerful. Note that all public comments are “considered” but not necessarily adopted; the federal program officers, using their knowledge & expertise & experience, have the final decision (as it should be IMO). My state uses a similar procedure, and we respected transparency & external input. We want stakeholders (consumers, providers, caregivers) to share thoughts / suggestions - they have a unique & valuable perspective. It’s a lot of work & some public comments are bizarre but it’s worth it when you get excellent ideas / recommendations. What RFK Jr and this entire misguided administration are doing is regressive & oppressive. It’s dangerous! Do you trust these people to actually serve the public’s best interests? They have done lots of damage already.

? is there Any mode to institute accountability for all who gave testimony under oath and either ‘forgot’ or had purposefully lied followed by contravening actions? several cabinet members, supreme court justices, and others. examples are so many, is one most viable to set a precedent for (why not to lie)?

All the groups you mentioned are not the ones coming up with the actual changes that are being pushed through. The actions by different officials across the three branches of the Fed are very coordinated and systematic, even as they seem chaotic in their implementation.

My comment was a facetious one, because I know that the majority of the actions are coming out of the Federalist Society, Heritage Foundation, Steve Bannon, Dan Schultz, Project 2025 authors, etc.

I agree that the information about strategy and plans were mostly out in the open. There was a lot of reporting and hand-wringing, but not enough was done to prevent or counter it. With the exception of the Democratic Attorneys General, who have met daily to prep lawsuits for the past 4-6 months, the Democratic Party completely underestimated and avoided the hard work required to do anything meaningful to prevent what has now come to be.

Where do we go from here? We are at a critical juncture, and the time for complacency has passed. We need to hold our current leaders accountable - and elect new leaders who will act urgently to stem the bleeding, triage the damage, and take aggressive countermeasures to regain political power. The GOP has already proven how effective a grassroots-focused Precinct Strategy can be, filling more precinct committee person positions than Democrats in key battleground states and creating a strong, organized base.

Unless SCOTUS is prepared to completely jettison the APA, it will be difficult to do secret rule making. Recall the census case where the court made them go back and follow the procedures. The overruling of Chevron if anything reinforces these process requirements.

Sigh. I know the much of administration wants us back in the 50s, (18 or 19, take your choice). But going back before Nixon is not really the time of public involvement that it really wants.

Does anyone know what would be a specific example of items we were previously able to comment on? Or examples of how commenting helped change/impact loans, public property, grants etc. in the past? As I’m sure many of us are, I’m trying to keep up with the concrete implications of all these rights being systematically stripped away…
