"[E]very court to consider preliminarily enjoining a ban on gender-affirming care for minors has found that such a ban is likely unconstitutional," a Trump appointee noted in the Tennessee case.
It struck me while reading this: shouldn't women be entitled to abortions under the same arguments (except the parental rights one). Why is it OK for our right to medical treatment to be less than men's or trans youth or fetuses, for that matter?
You're absolutely right, which is why one of the common chants at queer Pride marches this year is "reproductive and trans rights: same struggle, same fight."
That is the huge light bulb that went off for me years ago. The scientific argument. Medical doctors are, by definition, scientists. The technology and procedures used are safe and effective. Which also ties into the argument that if one has the money, they will get what they want. They can continue to seek treatment in other countries, while the poor cannot.
Sure, there are doctors who oppose abortion. I contend they are doctors who are not scientists. As with any person, their tentative position is based on a mixture of reason and belief. When we drill down very deep, there is no one correct answer defining the life growing in a woman's uterus. That decision is entirely up to the owner of the uterus. Sorry, guys.
I don't know why doctors aren't more upset about this stuff. It's a direct attack on their professionalism and independence. Why aren’t medical associations suing states for anti-abortion and anti-trans treatment laws? I’m mystified by this. Some states are imposing criminal liability for violating these laws. That's extreme and unacceptable. I feel like I must be missing something because I never hear about doctors/nurses being up in arms about this.
These anti trans people use such dishonest language when they talk about gender affirming care for youth. It’s always referred to as “transitioning” or sex change” procedures regardless of what the care entails, and it is always described as “experimental” (cough, cough, bullpucky, as Rachel Maddow might say, there’s nothing experimental about it!). It is so telling how even these bloody bigots know that without the lie, they couldn’t sell their garbage laws.
People sometimes overlook that everything we do is experimental. As the church's grip on humanity weakened, we started dissecting cadavers. This led to experimental treatments, which were tested, refined, and sometimes discarded. Sometimes, individuals die from treatments. It happens.
But we provide data for doctors, for future decision-making. If you use a maintenance medication, like insulin or (in my case) a statin, you are experimenting on yourself. Especially if you have no problems with a medicine and live a full life, you become a data point. Which is GOOD. Then we develop new treatments based on that data.
Keep on fighting this fight for
freedom of choice.
