Conservatives closed ranks to support the justice — with legislative efforts, as detailed in Pro Publica, but also with public recognition. (And, of course, private flights.)
Thomas' was a hollow threat to leave the Court. It's not like he had any experience seeking work in the actual job market, and I doubt very much he was eager to try it out. Your last sentence, Chris, tells the tale:
And here I thought that people aspired to join SCOTUS for the prestige of being one of nine justices of the highest court in the US; of having reached the highest pinnacle of one's legal career. But no.
Old Clarence here simply saw being on the Court as a cash machine, rather than public service. Had he left the Court in a huff (which he would have done, had he the backbone to actually carry out his threats) he wouldn't have found gainful employment on the outside. Consider his career prior to his stepping into government service. He was nowhere in the private sector.
His threats were hollow and empty, just like he is.
I am confident this will all be charged in a sweeping Federal RICO indictment. It must be done, because these people are organized criminals, nothing more or less. This is why it must be done before the election, because we are deciding whether to hand our country over to a criminal enterprise that has been operating this way for decades.
The Clarence revenge tour will roll on until he leaves in a box. That Biden is Prez while this is happening makes it more delicious for Clarence. Joe was Chair of the Judiciary Committee for Clarence's confirmation hearings.
I need more info on Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett. The behind the scenes of overturning Roe article shows the potential. Kavanaugh's campaign to be a judge and justice surely has some rich material for an extended profile. These Thomas (and to a lesser degree Alito) articles are great. But, it's getting a bit repetitive in a fashion.
Had the 11th A. US Const been abolished - if States had to pay out cash that would have been the end of it and all of the various born again RTL scams would have ceased. The real reason Roe was overturned would have never happened - i.e., constant challenges to and a divided court. Once ultra sound was upheld in conjunction with other undue influence and of course women wanted to see - it was all over - i.e., proof the woman was pregnant and the end to doctor-patient privilege. There was another way too. A simple Constitutional Amendment "Life begins at birth and ends at death". Congress never lives up to its end. The SPM is gutless.
It comes down to this - why do you want to be a Judge? The appearance is cash. Personally I'd do it for a comfortable house where I could work without being disturbed, subsistence, a person to do my meals, house cleaning, laundry, a caretaker and immediate access to any reference I want. Government ought to provide that to me. And if I survived after my term was done a modest pension. What more could anyone want? A person that needs compensation has to establish facts that prove it's an indispensable necessity. No one in that position should have to be bothered to prove that and the only way all of that could be done without controversy is if it's supplied by government not by paying the Judge to find people to do it for them.

Twenty-three years later, only Thomas remains.

We should love so long.
Oops, live so long.
Thank you, Chris for fleshing out ProPublica's report on Thomas and the court at that
time.
It's always the money, isn't it!? In 2000, 173 thousand
was a really good starting
pay, unless you start running
up a hefty debt tag. Then, ethics take a hike.
