Tuesday's superseding indictment in federal court in D.C. is the special counsel's response to July's Supreme Court ruling, which largely favored Trump.
It's sad that a special counsel has to do all these insane legal gymnastics to clear a high bar, which the Supreme Court raised even higher, just to punish a man for the literal attempted overthrow of the US government. The soul of American democracy (if such a soul ever existed) is gone.
I get what you’re saying. It’s been a much harder slog than many expected, to try and get justice against Trump for the very real damage he did to our country. But the soul of our democracy isn’t gone.
Look at Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Look at the masses of people registering. Look at everyone who is donating. The truth is that democracy has to be renewed every two years and most especially every four years. It takes work, and every vote is a renewal of democracy. It was always for us to renew it.
I sincerely believe that we are, and we will, and we will finally be able to pass all the necessary laws, with Manchin and Sinema finally gone from the Senate.
People say "it was always on us" but it shouldn't be. Pretending that the system is meant to be projected from this kind of legal and seditious behavior primarily at the ballot box ignores all the laws and systems that we supposedly have in place. If the system were working as if was designed to, Trump would be running for president from a jail cell. We, at the ballot box, should not even be a part of the process. 12 jurors, for each case, are the only private citizens who are meant to be involved in his incarceration. I get what folks are saying, that that's not what has happened, but framing it as how it's meant to be I feel does a great disservice towards any potential of the system to recover to what it's designed to be
Yeah this was what I am getting at. I know that democracy still exists in America and MUST be protected. But the fact that Donald Trump can even run AT ALL in violation of the 14th amendment, let alone have full presidential immunity is unthinkable.
Republicans always talk about the "soul of democracy" about the "founding fathers" about "Christian principals" about all these high spiritual concepts behind freedom in America. But they have shown that those concepts are dead and they were whole heartedly gleeful in killing them off by thrusting someone like Donald Trump to the top of the Republican party. If the "soul" that I talk about was still alive, Trump wouldn't have gotten past the 2023 primaries.
Democracy is still believed in, some people (hopefully enough people) will fight for it, but they're fighting against a soulless throng of MAGA zombies and Trump's network of soulless (and I would argue godless) fascist administrators in places like Project 2025.
The damage to our legal system perpetrated by tRump, enabled by McConnell who could have led tRump's impeachment conviction in the Senate, will take time to heal. Only our voting, which is under duress, holds the key to legislative change that SCOTUS will be hard pressed to thwart. If we can expand SCOTUS to match the 13 Federal court circuits, this rogue SCOTUS will be further neutralized. So much hard work lies ahead, if we can manage it.
And thank you Chris for following so closely and dissecting the superseding indictment into quite comprehensive language, to show that Smith is tenacious and will continue to parse language into a form scotus can and will have to accept. Trump may be running scared from “debt collectors” but the five are running from “THE PEOPLE”
Personally, I think Donald was trying to appeal to Mike Pence his running mate who, because he happened to be the incumbent, would be handling the certification of the results. He assumed that Pence would be as grasping and venal as he, and willing to compromise his principles for a chance at overturning the election results to stay in power. I don’t think Donald gave any thought to whether the duty was official or not. He was asking his RUNNING MATE to help cheat.

Excellent Rebecca. We must
persist. Not one step back!

Can’t wait for Merchan’s sentencing!
Thank you!

All else aside, if Thomas and Alito had recused like decent people, the evidence issue would have gone 4-3 against Trump.
