The National Voter Registration Act of 1993 bans such last-minute efforts. Republican officials in Alabama and Virginia simply ignored the law and went ahead anyway.
Here in Tennessee, the Secretary of State's office mailed 14,000 letters to naturalized citizens suggesting that there were problems with their registration and reminding them of stern criminal penalties, including jail time. Turned out that none of the recipients had actually been found to have problematic registrations, and after public outcry, the state sent follow-up letters basically saying it was all a mistake. But in the meantime several hundred recipients had cancelled their voter registrations out of fear.
Secondly, will the South ever recognize that all men - including those of color- are equal? And that women actually have rights, too? One was supposed to go forward in the 21st Century … not back to the 19th.
Time for some divine intervention, methinks. Nothing else seems to be working at anything except cross-purposes. Part of the problem is that certain parties don't read history.
I also read this morning that students at the Univ. of Wisconsin received anonymous, threatening emails about criminal penalties for improper voting while they're in school. Apparently there is a polling place on campus, which infuriates Republicans. The sender hasn't been traced yet, but the fear is that some students won't vote as a result of this.
True, but know thy enemy and all that. I just genuinely wanna know how these people can approach such a black and white issue but just on the totally wrong side of things
I think the argument is that it is individualized because they're referencing records on the individual. There is a problem with the systemic purge, but the argument would be this is not systemic, it is specific because we have documents on certain people. I think the Virginia AG would argue systematic purge would be based on some other metric (over 100 years old, or also registered in another state), not the "suspicion" created from the records.
I see, I don’t know how many people these states want purged but I’m highly suspicious of them having conclusive documentation on probably thousands of individual cases of people they want purged. Also, does this mean that the framing in Mr. Geidner’s post is off then, since it talks about “systemic purges” constantly?
No, I do not think the post is off. I think this is just what the Virginia AG would say, but not to say that one is right or the other. My personal belief is that both of these positions (as to systemic purges interpretation) are reasonable and should be resolved by the court. The problem I have is I do not know what evidence the AG's have that the voters are ineligible. The timing of removing people from voter rolls right before an election should be a concern. Removing it right before an election can create undue burden. Also, if voter rolls have bad names, one shoulda taken care of that at an earlier date. Could have done this anytime in the last 3 years.
Seems to me once you start looking at rolls you're no longer in individual territory no matter how you try to spin it, because you're starting from a base of multiple entries that you have to sift through.
Individual would be if I thought you were illegally registered and so I alerted the registrar (or whoever handles that sort of thing) and they looked you up specifically.
I'm too polite to say publicly what I think of Miyares and Trumpkin, but I thank the good lord the latter can't run again. And I hope if the former decides to run again he gets utterly trounced.
According to historian Heather Cox Richardson, the best way for the D party to win is to get the votes of the non-engaged and persuadable; DT has reached his upper limit.
Skullduggery is likely afoot everywhere to intimidate or purge voters. The Rs know there are more of us. GOTV. Volunteer with campaigns, send postcards, donate, any or all.
Firstly, how does a man who actually was president for four years not understand how government works?
Roy Cohn showed him a fanciful movie version of the mob work: Gotti growls, “Jump;” the boys growl back, “How high?” And like magic the deed is done … and any bloodshed is offscreen.
Thank you. I’m curious how they can reinstate all these voters in time for the election & get them notified in time to vote. Will all these efforts to re instate them be for naught?
It’s horrible to read about this chicanery. Purportedly intelligent people purposely subverting our laws for their own nefarious ends. Good to know that decent judges are swatting them down. But what a colossal waste of time!

This is what they do.
See what I mean? People don't read or know history. Read Timothy Snyder's "On Tyranny" and watch what happens...

I wonder which other red states will be trying this stunt.
I hope the VA Dems are running ads in VA about this. Miyares and Youngkin are shameless hyperpartisans.
Yup, brazen is as brazen does!

Goes to show how reliably Republicans will perform as the ButtF*ckers that they are.
I genuinely can’t even imagine what legal arguments the Virginia AG has in support of this, does anyone know?
Who needs real arguments when you can shop for MAGA judges?

Any TRO? A 10/24 hearing sounds a tad late. They need to stop the purges right now.
