Then the parents should put their kids in a private school. A public school is a school for EVERYONE!!! If they want to educate their kids to be small minded and unaccepting of others , they don’t even belong in public school—-

This is my county. I’ve dealt with these bigots for years - first they were against sex education and lied about the text books and it took years to get sex ed into our high schools. Then our county council enacted civil rights protections for transgender people and they fought against that - with lies. I was told by one of their organizers that we could not call them bigots because among their supporters were black people and Muslims. I told him “fine, the bigots are the white Christians in your group”. They lost that one. We had 2 right wing book banners who ran for our school board last year including one who homeschools! They lost because our county isn’t totally full of rightwing pos. Clearly though SCOTUS is mainly bigots so I don’t see much hope for this. Let these bigoted parents and their outside money homeschool or go to “religious” schools.

The GOPMAGA agenda to maintain white supremacist power and their domination of American government after Whites become a minority in 2040 is pretty damned apparent. They've been working on it since 1995 but no one paid attention until it kicked into high gear and began its wholesale destruction of all intersectionality; for it can only continue to function on a divide-and-conquer basis.

And judging by how many non-whites who sat home in November, or voted Trump, because they just weren't compelled by "women's issues" and "Trans and LGBTQ issues", their strategy is working even though it directly harms 95-98% of the US population.

I predict they'll win and exterminate all we Trans/LGBTQ Americans while coaching non-whites how to put the shackles back on themselves as long as their political elites get their cut.

Meanwhile the administration continues to deport legitimate asylum seekers, refuse re-entry to transgender Americans, deport legal resident aliens and American citizens who are not white and not straight, eradicate all gender expansive humans, and help reverse or slow the demographic trends of the last six decades.

They're doing it right in front of us ALL, shamelessly and with great gusto and seeming self-satisfaction. The Dems are either feckless, helpless, or complicit. I don't see Dems white knighting our way out of this. Schumer is focused on protecting the criminal Netanyahu government over the interests of the American people and is collaborating with the GOPMAGA agenda and Jeffries can't muster enough consensus to wield what little power he has. Pelosi topped the House from below as House Minority Leader but that was a different time, before 80% of the billionaire broligarch class had switched its support to the GOPMAGAs. We're still reeling, feeling the effects of GOPSCROTUS rulings from 2008-2010 and there doesn't seem to be any hope of a legislative fix to the contamination of our political process by unlimited money. Dems have held the majority in both chambers WITH the White House only four years since then (2009-2011, 2021-2023) but couldn't swing it, even though they passed watered down versions of pretty impactful legislation (ACA 2010 & the IRA 2021) that was later FUBARed by GOPMAGA state AG litigation and GOPSCROTUS judicial activism creating new law from the highest bench.

But they just couldn't touch the $$$.

And so now we have a Congress with a single, united, dedicated goal; of passing NO LEGISLATION WHATSOEVER.

And so now too, here we are, watching the last remnants of our constitutional republic and representative democracy being gleefully shredded by grinning Nazi incels, script kiddies on ketamine, and the first cabinet in US history almost entirely composed of Fox News "personalities". By the end of this administration, they will have utterly feculated what little remains of our nation and eradicated entire classes of people they detest.

They're laughing at the mass protests because their voters will vote for them in their 95% safe gerrymandered districts even if they ate Nashville hot chicken style human baby on live television; there's no un-gaming decades of neo-Confederate and white supremacist state level douchecuckery. They are COUNTING ON the protests to justify Trump declaring martial law and ordering the US military and red state national guards and red state militias to begin the extrajudicial summary public executions of political opponents. And there are no "safe" countries for those who can afford to emigrate. Between now unchecked Russian aggression, Chinese hegemony, and billionaire corruption, the world itself has rather quickly spoiled and turned into a living embodiment of a toxic xitter thread commentariat. Capitalism beat communism in 1991 but without a Soviet Union to balance the powers behind the thrones of the West and keep them indifferently honest, free markets (i.e., ironically, REGULATED markets) and pro social economics fell victim to the worst angels of capitalist paradigms, the metastasized crony capitalism, laissez-faire, brutalitarian robber baronism, predatory, irredeemable, and ever hateful of humanity in every form.

That dystopian future we liberals and educated folks have been warning all and sundry for decades?

It's heeeeeeere...

And I don't see anyone stepping up with the power to stop them.

This style of argument just begs for the "Green Cheese" use case. All you need is someone whose religious belief is dogmatic in the belief that the Moon is made out of Green Cheese (or that the Earth is flat, or a Satanist, what have you) to basically object to any science courses where the Moon is mentioned NOT being made of Green Cheese, or the Earth is represented as NOT flat, or where Satan is not the lord of us all. Conservative arguments, even to the Supreme Court, never seem to adequately account for beliefs that are not their own sharing similar rights.

Because they can’t conceive of other people having rights equal to theirs. It is so obvious to them that their own beliefs and rights must take precedence that they are oblivious to the beliefs and rights of others.

If Barrett et al allow this wholesale book banning, Kids need to join the Satanic Temple and object to the Bible being in schools under this law. Maybe that’ll get them to change their mind

Bigotry cloaked in religion is still bigotry. I find myself short of breath so often these days. As the mom of a queer kid who was shunned by my siblings and their families - I find Alito's shock especially egregious and familiar. For Sam "the horror of queer folks' lives being represented in a book!!" This is the same outrage my family expressed about my kiddo wanting to talk about their new love - "We can't believe you would mention that in front of your cousins -( who were 16& 17!) While the rest of the cousins received excitement and interest for their hetero relationships. REPRESENTATION MATTERS and as Connie Turpin mentions in her comment - a public school is for everyone. Let's not traumatize and other queer kids and queer families in public schools - And on another note if you would not be able to unconditionally love, value and respect a queer child please don't have children!

And so, the LGBTQ parents can opt their children out of exclusionary story time demanded by straight parents. Correct? I would not have my child in such a class that allows bigotry to be practiced by the school.

And here we are, in 2025, with the Supreme Court majority ready to overturn Brown v Board of Education. It's just a skip from allowing gender discrimination to racial, religious, national origin, etc. When the Heritage Foundation et al come for one of us, they are coming for all of us.

Yep. We all have to hang together or they'll hang us separately. And I am not being hyperbolic. There are ministers out there who are calling for LGBT people to be executed. How long before they start passing draconian laws such as those wanted by those sociopaths at the Heritage Foundation?

How does the mere existence of LGBTQ affect “religious freedom”?

Up until Vatican 2, some Catholics absolutely believed in Blood Guilt (MTG still believes)—is that protected by religious freedom?

Similar to MAGA obsession with trans people (who make up less than 1% of the population), it seems to believe that the entire New Testament is devoted to homophobia.

Alito would be shocked to hear that schools teach things that aren’t facts, but are just values — things like “slavery is bad” and “democracy is good” and “respect the police.” And yes, some people have religious values that contradict these ideas.

First, Chris, I’m so embarrassed for our country that you had to listen to our highest court insult LGBTQ people.

Makes me queasy the same way as when state legislatures debate how many organs need to fail before you consider saving a woman that needs an abortion. We know in schools all around the country they are pushing anti-abortion misinformation and ending sex education. Can Unitarians sue over that?!

This feels like the Scopes case all over again. Are we going to have to re-litigate evolution, astronomy & physics?

I mean, the Big Bang, the size and nature of the universe and evolution are all contrary to the Bible…

It sure looks like that might be in the cards. I am so sick of these morons wanting to sheild their kids from knowledge of the normal world. Because they refuse to face facts, they want their kids to grow up as ignorant and narrowminded as they are.

I belong to the Matha church. Mathafarians believe math is too sacred to be exposed to the secular world, thus I am opting out of school room math for my children. Paying taxes is also forbidden by my religion. How convenient.

Schedule the reading sessions at the end of the school day. Dismiss students whose parents opt out early. If parents care this incensed they should be willing to pick their children early.

Why couldn’t they just say that the parents hiding their bigotry behind their religion can opt-out, but the school doesn’t have to provide supervision for their child during the opt out period? essentially, parents would have to pick up their child or not send them to school that day

Too bad we don't have an opt-out button for racism. 🙄

These people are entitled and full of themselves. Home school their kids or put them in private/religious schools. They're trying to make it a federal case to even have LGBTQ+ kids in school. Eventually backing them into a corner or closet. We see you people. Religion has no place in public schools. Next thing you'll hear is being Black goes against their religious beliefs. Why must these people try to dominate everything? This is NOT a Christian nation. What a joke you are. Bigots!
