I so valued this reminder that we might need a break from the unfolding disaster before us. It is certainly changing how I spend my time. I really enjoyed this post. Thank you!
Traditionally, one does not “suggest” a point you are “restating.” But, it is of no matter. I just wanted to be clear — as I thought my post was — that I was writing about a broader audience.
If any place can let one step back from the lunatic asylum that is the US right now, then it is the wonderful Edinburgh vibe. I envy you your experience at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and wish I too could have attended. I was there in November 2023 and have wanted nothing more than to once again tread the streets and landscapes of Scotland. Good on ya for taking a much-needed break and replenishing the creative energies. We ALL need to do that! (says a US ex-pat currently alive and kickin' in Western Australia).
Thanks for this Chris, glad you were able to get some distance from our self-inflicted unfolding disaster and get recharged! I have two adult trans kids and attacks on them are what got me motivated to get into the long running fight to resurrect our democracy, flawed as it is, and work on fixing the those many flaws to prevent a recurrence of this nightmare. It will take longer than the years I have left but needs to be done for our kids, their kids, all the other kids, and the survival of life as we know it on our vulnerable planet.
Clair Here💕Thank you for sharing what you learned and for sharing it with us.
Unfortunately we have a dictatorship in the making and like others before him have ignored the rule of law and have instituted law by Executive Order and the courts, especially the Supreme Court have “ winked and nodded “..
Trump is now on track to eliminate president elections and replace with president for life.. he very well may succeed.
The electorate majority is still in his camp…
On the domestic front he has already activated the military in actions against civilians..
My personal concern is for LGBTQ of which I a member ..I’m a 91 year old transgender woman who is concerned for our safety..
Again, thanks for your support, updates and legal analysis. ML 💕Clair
I worry about censorship. The regime can tolerate none of this arts and culture, because the truths they reveal can be a threat to those in power. I'm not sure how or when it will go, but I can't imagine they don't try, and I have no faith in the first amendment protecting anything as they've already discarded most of the rest of what was thought to be law in this country. Or perhaps our freedom of speech will be allowed, but no platform will host us, 'free' as they are to do what is in their best economic interests, which is to cooperate with the regime.
My family and I recently returned from a three week trip to England, Scotland and Ireland. It was a gift and break we gave ourselves from U.S. politics. It helped. No t.v. or news from home. I am slowly working my way through posts and get your need to refresh. Good on you and happy traveling.
Loved Scotland even though we arrived as the Queen’s death was announced on the plane so for a lot of when we were in the city, that momentous event rather messed with the normal operation of things there. Edinburgh is everything one expects in a large cosmopolitan area with way too much to do in the time one has to see it. Going to the theater was not on the bill then.
So glad you got there for the Fringe though. I get the What’s On Stage newsletter so stay up with all the theatrical goodies happening there and all around GB. It must have been a much more relaxing experience than even breathing has become here for many. Our safe, secure little world has gone totally haywire and I’m pretty sure people are in no way ready for the fallout which,as day follows night, will happen.
Have a safe flight back across the pond. Even flying is fraught with an unwelcome anxiety these days. Go figure 😡.
Good on you, mate. At least you can take a vacation in the EU where people are stll civilized. Sooner or later you'll have to come back to Trump land and it's phobic barbarians.

In our names. Yes.
It's there on top of the Constitution. "We the People."
We failed as a nation, and somehow, we have to help fix the broken system.
I'm glad Kamala Harris said it is broken. It doesn't just have the wrong people on top. It's broken.
Thank you Chris. We all
needed to have you tell
us about this view from
abroad.
I would suggest that an audience jeering and laughing at Trump has a much larger base than queer—it is worldwide.
I … think that was my point?
Captain Obvious here—there’s nothing wrong with restating that point … and perhaps stealing your observation - and limelight- as my own.

I appreciate all of your work and analysis, but today I just want to tell you how much I love your writing. You are a wonderful writer.
You brought me to Substack and I just finished my second month writing on here.

Read about the attack on New York Times v Sullivan that Trump is mounting

Thank you for this post and especially for your t-shirt.
Silence=death.
