I am removing anti-trans comments while trying to allow reasonable discussion. Apologies if I overstep, but, at the end of the day, it's my space and I do not want trans people to face anti-trans animus in a piece about not going after trans people.
As a trans person who, like almost every other trans person I’ve heard from or seen since Tuesday, is fighting to simply. breathe. right now, we really really don’t have any more energy to fight the people that are “supposed” to be on our side.
If it's just a couple of elected Dems, I agree they should be ashamed of themselves (I have long believed that Yglesias only serves himself and does not actually have the best interests of Democrats in mind, so his moral depravity makes me angry, but has no bearing on how I'll engage with the official Party).
If this is the start of a (bad!) trend, I'll be vocally renouncing my membership in the Democratic Party. Once that ball starts rolling, I know that I'm at risk as a gay man. But also, appeasing the right *does not work*.
Discarding marginalized people is morally wrong and strategically stupid.
After such a humiliating shellacking, apparently some Dems feel compelled to drink the bitter Republican Kool-Aid and blame trans people for the defeat. What’s next? Black women? Jews? Latinos? MAGA loathes them too. Tear down the gays, prop up rapists—let’s all move to Texas or Florida!!
Supporting trans folks did not ‘lose’ the election for Harris. People like Yglesias are using the loss as a convenient way to continue with their transphobia and push the party into being Republican-lite on many issues. Dem reps like him are the worst.
Living on Long Island, I'm particularly disappointed in Suozzi's comments. I know it's George Santos' district, but his comments were totally unnecessary and damaging right now. This is not helpful. But it's kind of what I've come to expect from many Long Island Democrats. Jeffries needs to get his caucus in order. Now.
Their masks came off yesterday.......Republicans now admitting (after year of lying and denying) that Project 2025 is real. They are laughing at everyone now..... "we fooled ya, it was real the whole time"
They plan on deporting naturalized citizens too......and to deputize regular citizens to hunt them all down..... gun crazed racist vigilantes profiling brown people for rounding up! .
They are fuckin DRUNK ON POWER now......a rabid and emboldened mob.
Can you provide something I can search for which will give a reputable source for "They plan on deporting naturalized citizens too." This sounds like propaganda to me.
There was another writer talking about immigrants here legally under work permits would be deported. Also, spouses of US citizens here "illegally". Naturalized not part of it.
Trump and the Republicans have co-opted the language of economic populism despite being fundamentally aligned with oligarchs and capital in general. No matter how good the economy is on paper, market concentration and private equity have continued to raise prices on things like rent and groceries beyond just what the Covid inflationary period has caused. Combine that with a lack of political and media literacy, and those selling a simpler message of fear and hate are far more likely to succeed than those who would actually address the issue.
I've read things by both people who say that Harris lost because she was too far left and that she lost because she pivoted to center. Being a lefty myself, it might seem I'm just pushing my own preconceived notions, but I've seen concrete evidence based on things I've seen while out canvassing for the labor union on campus over the past two days. Speaking of which, taking concrete action to try and make things better for everybody is a wonderful way to alleviate some of the hopelessness this lost has engendered. Far better than throwing some of those people under the bus or looking for people to blame.
This comment appears to be a variant of one of the major mistakes many. D’s and their advisors made in this election. I.e. believing if only the unwashed ( perhaps a more neutral term than garbage or deplorable) were only as smart as we elites are and couldn’t be misled so easily
As a small l libertarian dissatisfied by the choices offered me this election, the emphasis on the most extreme positions of the extreme wing of her party and her unwillingness to offend anyone by attempting to be all shades of grey, while, and black to everyone cost her dearly- the more voters got to know her the less authentic she became
I'm sorry, what? What extreme positions do you believe she took? You would rather she had been offensive? Yet at the same time implying that I am talking down to you or would call you garbage or a deplorable you sure do seem eager to take offense and be the victim. Listen, I'm pretty damn far from an elite, friend. I also have plenty of problems with the Democratic party and elitism within it. Would you mind letting me know what extreme positions you think she took though? I'm confused by your comment and what you meant to contribute to the conversation.
Sorry I'm not trying to be aggressive. I'm asking in good faith to explain more what you're trying to say. I apologize if my tone was a little snappy there.
Wow, thank you so much for this!! You are 💯 right. Although I would agree that some people were probably turned off by those anti-trans ads that said Kamala Harris would be paying for trans surgeries for prisoners, Moulton et al would have better off reminding people that that was the Trump Administration’s policy that Kamala Harris said she would follow and that the ads were grossly misleading—as the Lincoln Project tried to explain. I am especially grateful for your stressing that it is the Dem’s responsibility to protect the rights of the vulnerable, and I appreciate your highlighting Dave Wasserman’s data points which prove that Harris did succeed in combatting the shift to the right. I really needed to read this tonight because the Monday morning quarterbacking has really depressed me. The Dems knocked on more doors, made more phone calls, and made tons of donations. We worked hard and with optimism to try to bring about a miracle (elevate a new candidate in just 107 days) and all we have heard for two days is how crappy Dems are. It is awful. I was already heartbroken and all of these discussions have really been almost too much to bear.
Let's be clear, lest we forget. It is not just the Dem's responsibility to protect the rights of the vulnerable. It is the *government's* responsibility to protect the rights of the vulnerable. Republicans are not exempt from that responsibility. And all Americans should want the rights of the vulnerable to be protected. That is not a responsibility that comes from having a D next to your name that is a responsibility that everyone has to be a member of a civilized society. And while it is true that the party *most likely* to protect the vulnerable mat be the Democratic party, let's be clear of who all is actually still responsible for it but just shirking that moral and ethical responsibility.
Okay, read the full article here. Listen, the same thing happened in the 1930's about the LGBT+ in Nazi Germany. All one has to do is watch the documentary 'Eldorado' and you will see how they managed to force everyone, who didn't believe like them & were scapegoated, out of the country. This is indefensible and like I said earlier, this has been going on for a long time. The only reason the light got put brightly on trans people is because the GOP scapegoated us. Our private lives shouldn't have become public, because it's clear people only want to take pot-shots without knowing one bit what they're talking about.
I didn't change my 'biological sex'. I changed the fact my brain was always male while my body was female. That is what changed. A lot of things had to be altered as well, and the surgeries only make us feel as comfortable in the wrong bodies as we can get. WE know that before we attempt to alter anything.
Children don't have access to surgeries unless their parents agree and a host of other things are in alignment. The waiting lists are long, and many things have to be evaluated. You don't go somewhere and return another gender. That was a whole lie being told about trans children. Leave them alone!
Without mainstream corporate media telling our stories, folks are left to either believe the rhetoric because they're already transgender bigots, or talk with one of us personally for a while. That's the only way to gain understanding of what this is about. Everything else is hyperbole, disinformation, rhetoric, misinformation and flat out hatred of folks they don't understand.
A few people running around these comments are a symptom of what's really been going on much longer than when TFG pulled us into the political fight. We were already fighting from what he did the first time in 2016. We have to fight our friends, family, business associates, etc. when we come out, too. Now we're being unfairly targeted with little to no 'good & accurate' information being spoken out there. No lie, these people in here who are transphobic are sickening & disgusting. They're not trying to learn anything.
Harris didn't lose because people left the Dems to vote for Trump. If anything, there was some small shift of saner Republicans who shifted to Harris.
No, what happened is people stayed home. They didn't vote. I don't think they showed up to vote at all, by how much Dems lost in so many areas. We don't know why people stayed home. I know in Georgia, there was never a chance that a Black woman would be elected. Georgia had the chance to vote for a Black woman as governor and rejected it twice. And rejected voting for a Black man, too. The same could be in other states, or it could be something else, including people just sick of Democrats nammering on about Trump's criminal trials, or nammering on about Trump being a rapist, or nammering on about...whatever.
But people stayed home. They didn't vote. The turn out in Georgia t least was abysmal.
And none of it had anything to do with the trans community. These people throwing the trans community under the bus are just plain idiots. In fact, it's probably been their, and others like them, incessant nammering about something that caused people to stay home.
Frankly, I think people stayed home because they were just sick and tired of the race. Unfortunately, it was folk who would normally vote for the Democratic candidates who stayed home. Or couldn't bring themselves to vote for a Black woman, as likely happened in Georgia.
If they got sick and tired of the race........they are going to be miserable with Dumpster in the WH, because the shit storm is coming.
Not voting to save freedom & democracy is not an option.
The Republicans already took off their masks yesterday laughing and admitting Project 2025 is real. Technically speaking, Project 2025 is not new.......Reagan implemented parts of the manifesto. The far-right updates their slavish manifesto each 4 years. It's on steroids now.
I'm not agreeing with the folks not voting. But it was folks not voting who tanked us. Why? We don't know.
The implication of the people quoted in Chris' piece is folks moved to Trump's side because of Democratic support for the trans community. But Trump didn't have any more voters this year than he did in 2020. In fact, likely a bit less.
We can guess. In Georgia, racism and sexism combined is a good guess based on past races. In Michigan, it could have been because of Gaza. And it could have been because people didn't like either.
But who knows. What I do know is that there was no exodus of Democratic voters to Trump.
I'm probably going to sound like a conspiracy theorist for saying this - but it feels like something nefarious took place. How does North Carolina elect a Democrat governor, Democrat lieutenant governor, Democrat attorney general, Democrat Secretary of State.......but then vote Trump? How do all these states that had abortion ballots get the yes votes to successfully pass it, but then they voted for Trump. It defies logic- and it's super hard to believe that 15 million registered Democrats sat out the vote.
Why are you assuming these folks are registered Democrats?
Take a look at the Clinton/Trump race figures. And further back to the Obama races. 2020 was the anomaly. And it was a whole lot easier to vote in 2020 because of COVID.
As for the abortion vote, Republicans also favor access to abortion for the most part.
What Trump has done is grabbing a big chunk of the country, all of whom are willing to turn out to vote for him no matter how difficult it is. More so than any other Democrat or Republican candidate in modern history.
Don’t delude yourself with this excuse- the final figures aren’t in yet but it appears that nationwide turnout will be very close to what it was when Biden won in 2020. Trump increased his percentage of the total vote in practically every county in the country. That is an undeniable swing that makes it clear that either Kamala is a horrible saleswoman and/ or the country rejected the D agenda that she was attempting to sell,
That's not the numbers I'm seeing. The count is 955 complete in Nevada, and 75% in Arizona. The numbers are in for the rest of the country.
And by the way, the Biden/Trump race was an anomaly. A much higher turnout than at any time in history, and much of it was for Biden. But even Trump had more that year than his previous win.
I agree. The last numbers I saw showed a 60% turnout compared to 66% in 2020, with Trump being short of about 2 million votes but Harris having 14 million fewer votes than Biden. Why, when faced with a democratic emergency, did those folks stay at home? To me that seems incomprehensible but it won’t be explained by blaming one group or another. It’s likely due to a combination of factors amongst which racism and sexism are likely to have played their part.
And one of the biggest factors could be that voting in 2020 was so much easier because of all the options put in place between of COVID. The 2020 race was an anomaly, with a much higher turn out. And this benefited Biden.
The thing is, to the millions, they may not have seen the emergency. We, on social media, see so much more noise than folks that aren't. Or folks who don't follow any form of politics. To them, frankly, they may have felt that what happens just won't impact on them.
Hopefully, someone will be doing an objective study in the different states of the nonvoters. Why didn't they vote?
What I do know, it wasn't because people shifted to Trump because of the trans community. That's just certain people's transphobia in action.
It's really nobody's business. Never should've drug us into this since corporate media wouldn't go out and interview trans people in the first place. They just let people like the other commenter in here run their mouths with disinformation like what she's saying.
We aren't changing our "sex". We are accommodating what some of us have known since we were little kids. But, let's not get into that with so many people upset that the idiot is back in office and will cause everybody harm.
If you want to see what extreme claims are being made, just read all her comments and the fight we had earlier in this thread of comments. Then multiply what she's saying by ohhhh, a few hundred million people, and there you have it.
I agree that Democrats should protect trans people, and shame on Yglesias et al., but I will assign some blame to post-modernists, who are all too common on campuses, especially. Their tendency to categorize people as oppressors or oppressed is not helpful, but their tendency to be intolerant of those who don't agree with them is the real problem. (I'm a scientist, so I take particular exception to their view that science is just another way of knowing.)
I banned the person spamming the comments with anti-trans attacks, which also should remove the comments throughout. Sorry, folks.
I am removing anti-trans comments while trying to allow reasonable discussion. Apologies if I overstep, but, at the end of the day, it's my space and I do not want trans people to face anti-trans animus in a piece about not going after trans people.

Thanks for your clarity on this, Chris.
If it's just a couple of elected Dems, I agree they should be ashamed of themselves (I have long believed that Yglesias only serves himself and does not actually have the best interests of Democrats in mind, so his moral depravity makes me angry, but has no bearing on how I'll engage with the official Party).

Totally with you
How are they "discarding marginalized people"?
It's right there in the title of Chris's post.
Are the advocating for legal discrimination for trans people? Reducing their rights? Forcefully detransitioning them?
Sam shut the fuck up you pea brained little bitch
Did I hurt your feelings?
Maybe you can’t read
I know Americans are dumb as fuck
Stupidity offends me

I hope none of your protagonist opinions/info are true, but I appreciate your insights.
Things are already so fractured now, it's hard to predict the next minor/major incursion that further disrupts our lives.
Thanks for the info!

I kind of mistyped. I'm Sorry.
There was another writer talking about immigrants here legally under work permits would be deported. Also, spouses of US citizens here "illegally". Naturalized not part of it.
Ok, thanks for clarifying. That is more believable and consistent with what I had seen in public speeches etc.
Take a look at this article.
Read the Unnaturalizing stuff in the 'Cruelty and fascism at our borders and within immigrant communities' section.

Thank you for clearly explaining these cowardly and indefensible positions. Sad that these clowns call themselves Dems.
And a major mistakes by mainstream D’s that they do not push back against the extreme claims for fear of being cancelled or labeled bigots.
What extreme claims involving trans people were made?
It's really nobody's business. Never should've drug us into this since corporate media wouldn't go out and interview trans people in the first place. They just let people like the other commenter in here run their mouths with disinformation like what she's saying.

The only way to have any tolerance in a society is for that society to not tolerate intolerance. Look up the paradox of tolerance
👏👏👏The post modernists and deconstructionists often turn reality and common sense upside down.
What the fuck are postmodernists? You have no idea because you’re a stupid fuck who’s never read a book
One would think a scientist might notice the empirical reality that actual "post-modernists" are rare if extant at all.
